Disabled dating in Edinburgh

From Stockbridge and the New Town to Leith and Portobello, find disabled singles across Scotland's capital and the Lothians, and plan a first date that works for both of you.

Scotland

Edinburgh at a glance

Edinburgh is a compact capital you can cross in half an hour, with the Lothians spreading out around it. Its history comes with hills and cobbles, yet many of its best date spots are pleasantly level: galleries, gardens, a riverside walkway and a seafront.

First dates

Edinburgh: accessible first-date ideas

Free, step-free and good for conversation: a few places locals rate for an easy first meeting.

National Museum of Scotland

Free to visit and step-free throughout, with a rooftop terrace that looks out across the whole city.

Scottish National Gallery

On the Mound, free and step-free, with Princes Street Gardens right outside for a gentle stroll afterwards.

Royal Botanic Garden

The grounds are free to enter, with accessible paths, glasshouses and views back towards the skyline.

Water of Leith walkway

Flat, leafy stretches through Stockbridge and Dean Village, ideal for a slow walk and a coffee stop.

The Shore at Leith

A relaxed waterfront of cafes and restaurants, a short hop from the accessible Royal Yacht Britannia.

Portobello

A long, flat promenade beside a sandy beach, only a short bus ride from the centre.

Getting about

Getting around Edinburgh

Expect hills and cobbles around the Old Town and the Royal Mile; the New Town, the gardens and the waterfront are kinder on wheels and tired legs. In August the Festival and the Fringe fill the city: lively and mostly in accessible venues, but very busy, so a quieter month can suit a first date better.

For eligible disabled people, a National Entitlement Card makes the buses between Leith, Morningside and Portobello free, which takes the cost out of a date across town.

Good to know

Edinburgh: your questions

Which places in Edinburgh are best for a step-free first date?

The National Museum of Scotland, the Scottish National Gallery and the Royal Botanic Garden are all free and step-free. For something outdoors, try the Water of Leith walkway or the promenade at Portobello.

Is Edinburgh hard to get around with a disability?

The centre is compact, but the Old Town is hilly and cobbled. Plan around the New Town, the gardens and the waterfront, which are much more level.

Can I meet someone from Glasgow or the Lothians?

Yes. People around Edinburgh come first, while members in the Lothians, Glasgow and the rest of the UK are there to browse.
