Staying safe, and a site you can actually use
The protections working in the background, the habits that keep you safe when you meet someone, and what we do to make these pages easier to read.
How members are protected
Checks on who people are
Free ID verification with a badge on the profile, a live video check with a moderator for anyone who would rather not share documents, and age checks where the law requires them.
Your details kept private
Nobody sees your real name or email address. Other members only see your nearest town or city, never your address or live location.
Block and report
Block anyone straight away so they can no longer contact or see you, and flag a member or a message for the moderators. A real support team is there day and night.
Scam alerts
You are warned when someone tries to move a conversation off the site to an app like WhatsApp, and unusual activity is picked up automatically.
Content checked on upload
Photos, videos and text are screened by software and people when they are uploaded, and potentially explicit images are blurred with a warning first.
Reputation that counts
Every member has a reputation score built from their behaviour and other members' feedback, so people who cause problems stand out.
Never send money
However real the connection feels, and however urgent the story, never send money, gift cards or crypto to someone you met online, and never share bank details or passwords. A request for money is the clearest sign of a scam there is.
If it happens, stop replying, block the person and report them. You have done nothing wrong, and the support team would much rather hear about it.
Safe, accessible first meetings
Take your time getting to know someone before you meet. A video call first is a quick way to check they are who they say they are, and to see whether the conversation flows.
When you do meet, choose somewhere public that you know you can get into and get around, and make your own arrangements for getting there and back.
- Have a video call before you meet
- Meet in a busy public place you have checked for access
- Tell a friend, family member or support worker your plans
- Book your own transport there and home
- Keep your phone charged and your medication with you
- Leave whenever you want; you never owe anyone an explanation
Making these pages easier to use
These pages use Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface designed for readers with low vision, along with large text, strong contrast and generous buttons. Every page has an accessibility button in the corner where you can make the text bigger, switch to high contrast or turn off movement.
If something on this site is hard for you to use, please tell us. We would rather hear about it than have anyone struggle in silence.
Safety and access questions
How do I block or report someone?
Open their profile or your conversation with them and choose block or report. Blocking takes effect straight away, and they lose all access to you on the site.
Someone has asked me for money. What should I do?
Do not send anything. Stop replying, block them and report them from inside the site. It is a common scam, and reporting it helps protect other members.
Is ID verification compulsory?
No, it is optional and free. Verified members get a badge on their profile, which helps others feel confident they are talking to a real person.
Can anyone see where I live?
No. Your profile only shows your nearest town or city, never your address or your live location.
Can I make the text bigger?
Yes. Use the accessibility button at the bottom of any page to change the text size, switch to high contrast or reduce movement.
