A couple laughing over coffees beside the narrowboats at Gas Street Basin in Birmingham; the man is a wheelchair user

Disabled dating in the West Midlands

From Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton to Solihull, Dudley and Walsall, meet disabled singles across the West Midlands, where good transport puts a lot of people within easy reach.

England

The West Midlands at a glance

The West Midlands is built around Birmingham, with Coventry, Wolverhampton, Solihull and the Black Country towns all close by. It is busy, friendly and full of canals, big parks and free museums. For dating, the main thing is that everything is near everything else. Trams, trains and buses join the towns up, so meeting someone from the other side of the county is usually an easy trip rather than an expedition.

City and Black Country

Disability dating in the West Midlands, close to home

With so many people living close together, there is a good chance someone you would get on with lives a short ride away. Members close to you appear first on Disability Dates, and you can look further afield whenever the mood takes you. When you do arrange to meet, choose somewhere you both know: a café you have been to, a park near a tram stop, or a station with a lift. Knowing the route already takes half the worry out of a first date.

Honest from the start

Dating for disabled people in the West Midlands, without pretending

Plenty of people spend years on mainstream apps working out when to mention a wheelchair, a hearing aid or a condition nobody can see. Here you can skip that bit. Say as much or as little as you like in your profile, and spend the conversation on what matters: your idea of a good Sunday, the football team you have stuck with, where you go for the best balti. Nobody you meet here will blink at a request for a ramp.

First dates

The West Midlands: accessible first-date ideas

Most of these are in or near a city centre, on level ground. Lifts and opening hours change, so it is worth a quick check first.

Gas Street Basin and Brindleyplace

Birmingham's canal towpaths here are level and lively, with narrowboats, bars and restaurants right on the water.

Library of Birmingham

Free to visit and fully accessible, with roof gardens on the upper terraces and views right across the city.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Glasshouses and mostly accessible grounds in Edgbaston. Warm on a cold day, and there is always something to point at.

Cannon Hill Park

A big, flat city park with a lake. Bring a coffee and take the long way round at whatever pace suits you.

Coventry Cathedral

The ruins of the old cathedral stand beside the new one, and much of it is accessible. The free Transport Museum is nearby for a rainy day.

Black Country Living Museum

Old streets, trams and costumed characters in Dudley, with good access over much of the site. Easy to chat when there is so much to look at.

Getting about

Getting around the West Midlands

Birmingham is the hub of the motorway network, and rail lines spread out from New Street in every direction. The West Midlands Metro tram runs between Birmingham and Wolverhampton and is step-free, and the main stations, New Street among them, are step-free with assistance you can arrange ahead. Blue Badge bays are easy to find in the city centres and at the big attractions. If you are meeting someone from another town, a tram stop or station you can both reach directly makes the plan simple.

Transport for West Midlands looks after concessionary passes for disabled people across the region. The pass lets you use local buses without paying at off-peak times, in the West Midlands and the rest of England.

Basically, I'm a music-loving Elder Goth. Music is soooo important to me. I'm happiest at a live gig. I love to hop on a train with my little chariot & visit other cities or even countries (not managed this for quite a few years) I would love someone special in my life again but even a good music-loving friend would be great. I can't handle racism, intolerance of any kind. I need an intelligent man to get me to use my brain more than I currently do, my illnesses definitely don't help, I have rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, scolio/kyphosis, the worst pain is in my lower back where I have spinal stenosis & the bottom looks like a pile of Jenga after it's tumbled. My knees won't completely straighten either due to arthritis but I hide them with flowing goth skirts. I can still dance after a few glasses of anaesthetic. My pain relief is totally inadequate. I think that's enough for now?
