Disabled dating in West Yorkshire

From Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield to Huddersfield, Halifax and Keighley, meet disabled singles across West Yorkshire and plan a first date among free galleries, parks and mill towns.

England

West Yorkshire at a glance

West Yorkshire mixes big cities with Pennine hills. Leeds is the busy centre, Bradford and Wakefield have their own museums and galleries, and the valleys around Halifax and Huddersfield lead up to Brontë country. Much of the best of it is free, which takes the pressure off a first meeting. The cities are flatter than the hill towns, so if steep streets are a problem for either of you, start in the middle of Leeds or Wakefield.

Leeds and the valleys

Disability dating in West Yorkshire, city or hills

Someone in Leeds and someone in Hebden Bridge can feel a world apart, even in the same county. Your first matches here are the people nearest to you, and you can look further afield when you like. A lot of members meet in the middle: Leeds and Wakefield both have plenty of level cafés close to the station, and the train between towns is often quicker than the roads at rush hour. If you would both rather avoid stations, Roundhay Park and the Sculpture Park have parking close to the paths.

Plain speaking

Dating for disabled people in West Yorkshire, said straight

Yorkshire folk are known for saying what they mean, and that suits dating with a disability. Tell people what works for you: a morning date because your energy fades later on, a quiet room because noise is hard, a lift because stairs are out. Ask what works for them too. It is a far better opening than pretending everything is easy, and anyone worth a second date will be pleased you were honest.

First dates

West Yorkshire: accessible first-date ideas

Plenty of these cost nothing to get in. Access can change from season to season, so check before you set off.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Five hundred acres of parkland near Wakefield, with step-free routes, scooters you can borrow and galleries indoors. Free to enter and lovely in any season.

The Hepworth Wakefield

A free riverside gallery with step-free access throughout. Small enough for an hour, interesting enough to fill any silences.

Roundhay Park, Leeds

A huge city park with lakes, gardens and the Tropical World glasshouses. Plenty of level paths and benches.

Leeds Art Gallery and Royal Armouries

Both free and fully accessible. The Victorian arcades and Kirkgate Market are close by when you want lunch.

Salts Mill, Saltaire

A free Hockney gallery inside a World Heritage mill, with the flat canal towpath right outside for a walk afterwards.

The Piece Hall, Halifax

A huge restored Georgian courtyard ringed by cafés and small shops, with accessible routes through it. A good spot for a coffee and a chat.

Getting about

Getting around West Yorkshire

The M1 and M62 cross the county, and Leeds is one of the busiest stations in the north, with local trains to Bradford, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Halifax and the valley towns. Most of the main stations are step-free, and staff will help you on and off if you let them know ahead. If you drive, Leeds and Bradford city centres both have Blue Badge bays, as do the bigger attractions. Outside the cities the Pennine towns are built on hills, so check how steep a street is before you pick a café there.

In West Yorkshire the disabled person's bus pass comes from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority. With it, you ride local buses for nothing at off-peak times, at home or on a day out anywhere in England.
